By BBN Staff: The Association of Protected Areas Management Organizations (APAMO) is calling on the Government of Belize to halt gold mining in the Chiquibul National Park.

“Gold mining has been ravaging parts of the Chiquibul National Park; derailing the conservation efforts to maintain the natural resources and the ecosystem services they provide to Belize. It is alarming that a mining license was granted to Boiton Minerals Limited to mine within a national park and left unmonitored; a protected area within the larger forest which the Government of Belize committed to protecting as per the National Parks System Act, a statement from APAMO expressed.

APAMO says that they have gathered evidence from an excursion into the Park that shows the severe damages caused to the natural resources by Boiton Minerals Limited’s mining operation and that the protected area provides critical ecosystem services to the Belizean population, particularly clean water.

“Belize is very vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and is in a serious economic crisis therefore the country depends on its forests to support our climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies.”

The organization ends its statement by asserting that Belize cannot afford destructive mining operations and therefore the Government should take urgent and decisive steps to halt this threat.
